Frequently asked questions.

Are you a positive-only trainer?

My approach is based on clear communication, fairness, and boundaries. In practice, that means:

  • I lead with positive reinforcement and teaching

  • I believe dogs benefit from being taught right from wrong

  • Any pressure or correction is used consciously, minimally, and only when necessary

  • The level of pressure used is tailored to the individual dog and the situation

  • Tools such as e-collars, when appropriate, are used at low, communication-level settings

Where does training take place?

Training typically begins at your home. Depending on your goals, I often suggest sessions in real-world settings such as parks, pet-friendly stores, hiking trails, or other environments that are conducive to learning and reliability around everyday distractions.

How long will it take to train my dog?

That depends on your dog’s starting point and what we’re working on. Some behaviors can be taught quickly, while others take more time. I’ll always give you an honest estimate based on your dog and your goals.

I’m here as an ongoing resource. When you sign up for training, you’re gaining continued support beyond the sessions themselves.

Do you use shock collars?

I use modern, high-quality e-collars when it is appropriate for you and your dog to support clear communication and greater freedom in real-world environments. These are not “shock collars” in the outdated sense. I use specific models and tailor their use to each individual dog, always prioritizing understanding and comfort. If an e-collar becomes part of your dog’s training plan, I’ll walk you through exactly how to use it confidently and effectively.

Do you charge for travel?

Travel to your location is included within 10 miles of Bozeman. Beyond that:

Single lessons

  • 10–30 miles: +$25

  • 30–60 miles: +$50

4-lesson package (reduced travel pricing)

  • 10–30 miles: +$20

  • 30–60 miles: +$40

Travel fees apply per visit and are based on round-trip distance. Distances beyond 60 miles can be discussed by request.

Do you offer board and train?

I offer takeaway (trainer-only) sessions, which are focused, hands-on training sessions where I work directly with your dog without you present. These sessions are a minimum of three hours, can last up to a full day, and are only available to clients already enrolled in training. While I believe lasting change comes from working with the owner, a takeaway session can be especially helpful in certain situations.

I offer boarding services without formal training, where your dog lives in my home while you are away. Boarding is structured to meet your dog’s individual needs, whether that means a calm, low-stress environment or ample play and exercise. I care for both easygoing dogs and dogs who have behavioral challenges or need additional structure and support.
